Kindergarten Readiness Team
Our Purpose
The team’s goal is to strengthen alignment across birth-to-five systems so that every child in Brown County—regardless of background or setting—has a clear, supported pathway to success in 5K.
Together, the team is working to develop shared readiness benchmarks, support families with practical tools and resources, and explore ways to measure progress at the community level.
Team Highlights
Developed a draft whole-child kindergarten readiness framework centered on five domains:
- Social-emotional development
- Language and early literacy
- Early math and cognitive development
- Physical development and self-help
- Approaches to learning and executive function
Begun mapping where existing systems align and where opportunities exist.
Many members were surprised on the alignment across assessments.
Reviewed readiness assessments and screening tools used across schools.
Each team member was tasked to interview Brown County school districts on their approach to kindergarten readiness.
The Team asked hard questions and developed a shared understanding.
Identified the importance of family-friendly resources, cultural responsiveness, developmental differences, and equitable access to supports.

Team Voices
“One of the strongest takeaways from this work is that Brown County does not lack commitment or care around kindergarten readiness.
What is emerging is an opportunity to create greater alignment, shared understanding, and connection across the many systems already supporting children and families.”
“As a team we look at the social determinants of literacy. We ask what is preventing kids from being able to read by third grade in Brown County.”
