Making Literacy Visible Across Brown County
Here’s what happened
With the support of funding, we created a shared look, message, and identity for our early literacy work so families and organizations could recognize they were part of something bigger.
What changed
Today, literacy is showing up in our community beyond the classroom, the awareness of the need is building. Our health care system is making literacy a priority, our elected leaders are showing up, literacy is in parks, neighborhoods and businesses.
More organizations are asking, “How can we help children learn?”
Why it matters
When everyone sees literacy as part of their role, not just schools, we create more opportunities for children to learn every day, everywhere they go.

What was invested?
Creating the space for our community to come together, learn, and take action around early literacy.
What did the investment make possible?
- More than 100 people from all walks of life came together around one shared goal: helping more children succeed through literacy.
- A safe space where people could learn from local data, hear different perspectives, and have honest conversations about what our community needs.
- Thoughtful facilitation that made sure every voice had a chance to be heard and every conversation moved toward solutions.
What happened because of it?
People left with more than ideas. They left with a commitment to take action.
- Healthcare partners committed to talking about books as literacy tools for early brain development instead of rewards.
- Community members stepped up to install Free Little Libraries in neighborhoods.
- New partnerships formed between organizations that had not worked together before.
- Volunteers joined Action Teams to continue turning ideas into action long after the event ended.

The Founding 50, are the first 50 individuals who committed to be a Better Futures Together Donor.
They receive benefits such as special recognition on our website, socials, and other media, invitations to special gatherings and recognition in our annual reports.
