Early Grade Reading Outcome
“Reading for the Future Initiative“
Purpose
In 2023, Community Listening Sessions in Brown County indicated that parents lacked confidence in supporting their child’s early literacy development. Things like playing, singing, talking, reading and writing interactions with a caring adult builds oral language, vocabulary, and other foundational literacy skills (5 Pillars of Literacy). Reach Out and Read’s trainings for healthcare workers is an evidence-based change in system practices. By embedding their model within existing healthcare infrastructure, Reach Out and Read is helping to build a seamless, community-wide web of support from birth through third grade.
Reach Out and Read Program Findings:
- Families participating in Reach Out and Read read more frequently to their children.
- Children exposed to our program had higher receptive and expressive language scores.
- Increased exposure to Reach Out and Read led to larger increases in language scores.
The Wisconsin based Reach Out and Read team requested support from the Achieve Brown County backbone team to help facilitate meetings with local healthcare providers.
